Clio, Muse of History

Unusual 15ct gold  and cornelian Georgian fob seal depicting Clio the Muse of History in classical dress with her chief attribute, a parchment scroll in intaglio. c.1790.

Navette shaped intaglio 1inch across, length of fob 1.25inches.

Like all the muses, Clio is a daughter of Zeus and the Titaness Mnemosyne, goddess of memory. She is described as "the proclaimer, glorifier and celebrator of history, great deeds and accomplishments."
