Georgian Agate Pansy Single Earring
Georgian agate pansy single earring c.1830.
Totally original with back to front fitting. The lapidary has employed a wonderful selection of mixed moss and Scottish stones all set closed back in gold with cut-down settings, each stone perfectly domed.
Length 6cms.
Pansies were employed in jewellery in the late Georgian and early Victorian period being symbolic of ‘pensee’ or thoughts, a short hand for ‘thinking of you’ ‘pensé a moi’. In the world of sentimental jewellery pansies could convey secret love, unrequited love or even platonic love. The sweetest and romantic of lover’s gifts.
I have always collected single earrings as historical documents though many can be converted to pendants too.
I can have the hinge fitting on this earring removed and add a gold bale to the top pansy for a small charge.
