Valerio Belli (1468–1546),a celebrated gem engraver and medallist, was the leading specialist in intaglios engraved in rock crystal, a difficult luxury form which Belli pioneered. These were highly sought after by wealthy Italian collectors. They developed their style from classical coins  to give "smoothly and eloquently orchestrated figural compositions". A true gem for the 18th century Grand Tourist.
