Georgian Pansy Ring

Georgian pearl pansy ring with three colour gold foliate shank c.1830.

15 ct gold, ruby, pearl.

Size 7.5

I have never seen such an elaborate carved shank in white, yellow and rose gold, with flowers, buds and leaves.

The pearls are a good even colour with one showing so wear though all secure. The central ruby is original. One petal is worn on the shank.

Pansies were employed in jewellery in the late Georgian and early Victorian period being symbolic of ‘pensee’ or thoughts, a short hand for ‘thinking of you’ ‘pensé a moi’. In the world of sentimental jewellery pansies could convey secret love, unrequited love or even platonic love. The sweetest and romantic of lover’s gifts.
