Bluish-grey agate cameo ring of the Ancient Athenian philosopher Plato.c.1790.

Set to an 18carat gold ring,with a classic Roman setting,the profile of Plato carved in the white layer of the stone,the bezel all original,the shank a later replacement.

Very fine condition.Size Q(UK),8(US).5.2grams.Bezel 2cms by 1.5cms.

The British Museum carries an engraving of a very similar gem depicting the profile of Plato.

Plato(428-347BC) is considered the father of Western Political Philosophy,his teacher was Socrates and his most famous pupil,Aristotle.Unusually his entire body of work is believed to have survived intact for over 2,400 years.
