15 carat Victorian opening ‘envelope’ mourning ring dated 1870.
The wide band is edged with a chased border and would have originally held a woven hair band. Now absent the design is eminently wearable. The chased envelope functions well and still holds the original hair locket within. Rich warm colour gold.
The inscription reads In Memory Of W.Gillbanks Obt 3rd October 1870 aged 50.
