Faithful in Adversity was popular historical sentiment representing unconditional love, enduring friendship, or steadfast loyalty.

In the Victorian language of flowers and symbols, Ivy represents eternity, fidelity, and strong attachment because it is an evergreen that clings tightly to its support. The column represents strength and stability. When ivy is depicted climbing a broken classical pillar, it means: "My loyalty will cling to you even if everything else crumbles" or "I will remain constant through life's storms"
