Georgian paste witches heart with a garnet-set arrow piercing the heart c.1770.
The arrow functions as a pin which would have originally fixed the lace to the brooch. The heart is now converted to a wearable pendant.
Popular in c17th Scotland ‘luckenbooth’ witches hearts were believed to be talismanic to ward off evil spirits.By the late c18th and early c19th they were recognised as symbols of spellbinding love.
