Georgian Portrait miniature of William Shakespeare

Rare c18th portrait miniature of William Shakespeare after the so-called Chandos Portrait.c .1780.

Now converted to a pendant, this would have originally been a ring, as can clearly be seen by the concave reverse. The setting is 15 carat gold.

Georgian period miniatures of William Shakespeare were fuelled by an era of intense "Bardolatry", the romanticisation and near-religious worship of Shakespeare initiated by David Garrick and his famous 1769 Shakespeare Jubilee.
