Witches Heart Pierced by an Arrow
Unusual Georgian sentimental pendant formed as a witches heart pierced through with an arrow c.1790.
The 15 carat gold witches heart is aflame and has a glazed locket. The flame implies intense passion.
Likely originally worn as a fichu pin, later added pendant loop.
Very small chip to glass only visible with loupe.
1 inch in length.
The witches heart with its distinctive twisted tail was originally felt to be a protective amulet, particularly in Scotland, where it was known as the Luckenbooth, warding off evil spirits. However, by the 18th century, its meaning shifted to represent being "bewitched by love".
