Late Georgian Diamond Snake Ring
£1,250.00
Late Georgian 18 carat diamond engraved snake ring c.1830.
2.8 grams.
Size 8.5.
Fine slender model which would have formerly been crosshatched and enamelled in black. Only traces of enamel now remain and vestiges if the cross hatch engraving. The gold bead eyes are surprisingly unworn. Open back old-cut diamond (0.2 carat).
Snake rings of the c19th symbolised eternal love, wisdom, and rebirth. This trend exploded in 1839 when Prince Albert proposed to Queen Victoria with a coiled gold serpent ring featuring an emerald-set head of quite similar form to this ring.
