Je Reste Sur Mes Souvenirs

Enigmatic Georgian high carat  gold and enamel memorial pendant bearing the legend 'Je Reste Sur Mes Souvenirs' or 'I cling to my memories'.c.1800.

The pendant loop unscrews to open the hinged ring.The reverse is beautifully decorated with enamelled wheat-ear foliage  and a woven basket depicted at the base. The symbolism of the cut wheat is often seen as the gathered wheatsheaf, unusual here in separate wheat sheaves. It can be seen as a memento mori in that it denotes life cut and renewal,the resurrection of the soul. A true curiosity.
